Building Your Health Ministry

FHIA Churches 2

What is a Health Ministry?

Throughout scripture, God calls people of faith to healing. A Health Ministry incorporates values, beliefs, and practices of a faith in motivating persons toward health and wholeness.
The Health Ministry encourages, supports and empowers congregants about the importance of health to create a healthier community.

Starting Your Health Ministry

  • Learn all you can – make sure you and your health ministers complete the online trainings provided by FHIA. Research the health disparities that are affecting your community. If you need more trainings, ask and we will assist you in setting them up.
  • Make sure your Pastor is supportive – This is key to having a successful health ministry!
  • Form your team – ask your congregation for volunteers, check in with the youth. Is there someone who likes to workout and is active? Ask them. Do you have someone in the medical field in your church? Ask them. Find leaders within your church to help you move your work forward.
  • Develop a plan – this is what the Action Plan is for. Get creative and start developing your plan. Make it work for your team. Is the women’s ministry meeting soon? Ask for a few minutes to have a health moment.
  • Survey your congregation – you will all receive a link for your pre-survey. Complete these as soon as possible so we can provide you with a report. Do you want printed versions? Let us know.
  • Plan health events and activities – more information provided below.
  • Begin with the needs of your congregation – Do you know anyone suffering from cancer? Honor them and focus a Sunday service on health awareness.
  • Keep your Pastor and church informed – ask for 5 minutes at every service for updates, create a bulletin board, write a report for the pastor, set up monthly meetings. Communication is key!
  • Grow and connect with the community – There are so many resources and community partners to support you and your health ministries. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and bring your neighborhoods into your work.
